I'm a job seeker and not on the interviewing end of things, but I'm often very unpleasantly surprised by the number of people who show up at professional networking meetings wearing unkempt casual clothing and suffering from the worst bad breath! I always try to be polite, but really, I don't want to introduce these offenders to my contacts or refer them to potential employers. Wise up, people - hygience and dressing for success really do matter!

Hi, just curious about #4. I feel that placing the cover letter in the body of the email makes perfect sense and would eliminate the problem of multiple attachments. I would like to ask though, why the animosity towards documents that include both the resume and cover letter as they would certainly appear if a recruiter were looking at a printed copy. I'm just not clear on why that would make you toss out an otherwise attractive candidate.

Additionally, I would like to ask about attachments in general. Typically people are advised not to open attachments from people they do not know. Junk email filters often put emails with attachments directly into the junk folder. Is it proper (or prudent) to send an email with an attached resume to a recruiter unless specifically asked to do so. Or is it preferable to mail the letter and resume. To be honest, I've never even applied for a job that didn't ask for a paper resume, but you seem to suggest that may not be commonplace anymore, so it may be helpful to know.

Thanks in advance.

3 graphs - entry (please insert the name of the person who referred you in the first sentence), core (why they should care), out (your call to action).

More than any other profession, attorneys are judged on their writing capabilities. Every piece of written correspondence is an opportunity to show how capable you are.

Succinct, clear and on target. If you don't add fluff to a brief, don't add it to a cover letter.

I had a fabulous language arts teacher in high school who taught grammar in a way that stuck. My first job as a high school senior was as an office assistant for a rapidly growing high-tech company. The managers quickly realized I had an eye for typos and would hand me a huge stack of resumes (this was back before email) and ask me to sort them into two piles: one for those with typos and one for those without typos. Guess which pile was larger? They'd collect the smaller, more manageable pile of resumes without typos to start the review process and ask me to send letters of rejection to the rest. As a teenager ready to head off to college and start a career, that was an eye-opening experience for sure!

Thanks Kathi,
Another reader who is playing recruiter! I too love a proofreading challenge. No one had spotted that one either.
Imagine creating typos! It was painful, but really any excuse for chocolate covered pretzels is worth it. Almost!
Candy involved or not, there is never an excuse for errors like these on a resume or any job search document!
Best, Jessica
